Once famous for mining, the workers of Olbernhau, Germany, had to find another livelihood when the ore ran out. Many miners started using the plentiful beech trees to make small toys, and now the area is known as the gateway to toy country. Hess-Holzspielzeug is a family-owned company part of this German toy-making tradition.

This book has splinters

I was disappointed when I received this book. Every page of this book has splinters. It looks like the manufacturer didn’t sand down the pages. The cut-out shapes weren’t cut out very well. It looked like the saw didn’t quite remove the shape, thus leaving jagged edges. This book sits in my closet, as I don’t want my son hurting himself on the jagged wooden edges. Another thing is that this book looks like it’s made of plywood instead of solid wood.
